DIY Home Decor Balls & Box

This is a quick and easy decorating tip. DIY home decor balls are simple to make and only require a few supplies.... hot glue, any kind of rope, yarn, or string (preferably thicker), and a sphere of some sort (styrofoam ball, wiffle ball, etc...).

First step is to start at any point with a dab of hot glue and circle the string around the center point, gluing as you are winding the string around and continue until the whole ball is covered.

Ta da! Simple and cute!

After seeing all these decor ball tutorials on line, I thought why not decorate a box? Any size box can be used applying the same method as the balls, outcome: you get a cool piece of DIY art. I used twine on the box, it was a little time consuming but it was totally worth the finished product!

I placed my new decor on top of my entertainment center and paired it next to a bottle of Chianti saved from my birthday last year.

I am trying to get back into the groove of crafting, but I promise... more projects coming soon!

Candy Corn Wreath

Time To Decorate!

My sister in law picked up this magazine for me the other day... To be honest I have never opened or read through a Woman's Day magazine. They have so many brilliant ideas for October/Fall/Holiday decorating, etc. (There are super cute how-to cupcakes that I might have to attempt to make.)

The wreath on the cover is made from candy corn, and it didn't look that difficult to make at all.

You'll need a styrofoam wreath (I used a 12 in. one, the magazine recommened a 16 in.), black duct tape, wide ribbon, and candy corn (my size wreath took 3 11oz bags, Brach's brand). Start by covering the wreath with the tape.

Start in the middle of the wreath laying candy corn the same direction and continue all the way around... there is going to be a gap once going around, just be sure to start the next  row in the same spot each time, you can cover any candy corn free space with the ribbon. Repeat with each row opposite of the once before. Loop ribbon of choice through wreath and hang on a sturdy nail.

Here is my new Halloween wreath!

I love it!

Dinning Room Chair Turned Accent Piece

CraigsList Find!
I was searching through CraigsList last month and meandered my way to the "free stuff". I came across two slightly hideous chairs and thought to myself, what a fun project!!! Oh yeah, immediately called my mom to have her pick them up for me (thanks mom!- they were in the same city she lives in and they would have not fit in my car!).

How gross is this? Only one of the chairs made it for the remodel, the other one was in pretty bad condition.

I have been wanting an accent chair for my room for awhile but have just been pushing it aside. I initially wanted to paint the chair a mustard yellow and then use the same fabric from this post Faux Headboard Art. Well come to find out it is a special home decor fabric, and it was going to take three weeks to get to me (I don't have that much patience) and it wasn't on sale from when I had originally bought it. Ughhh....

photo.JPG
So taking the original fabric (top) that I had wanted to use, I decided settled on stripes instead. Now the hard part was to decide which color to use.... black stripes with the mustard yellow paint or yellow stripes with black paint. I ended up buying both of the striped fabrics. Next stop was the store for some spray paint (Did you know I am OBSESSED with spray paint?). Of course they have a WHOLE entire aisle of spray paint- and NO mustard yellow. I did end up buying a color I thought would look good, and I tested it on the other chair--- yeah it looked like a school bus.

So by process of elimination I went ahead with the yellow striped fabric and black paint.

I am in LOVE with how it turned out! It looks really good as an accent piece in my room. As mentioned before check out this post and you will see what I am talking about. It was a bit troubling at time trying to figure out how to reupholster this chair... with A LOT of help from my mom (thanks mom!) we were able to pull it together! Definitely learned a lot for next time, but for now next time is A LONG way aways.

Cheese Cloche Redo

Cheese Cloche & A Candle Holder....

I have seen so many different ideas using both the cheese cloche & a candle holder/base. My favorite redo is over at House of Hepworths but there are so many different styles and ways to do this project the possibilites are endless!

It took me awhile to find these two items, searching high and low between good will and garage sales I finally came across two that I like!

I found the cheese cloche at a local garage sale for $1! And the candle base I found at an antique expo for $5. The cheese cloche was in very good shape, so I didn't even have to prep or prime it. I used E6000 glue (this stuff is amazing!) and glued the two together. Then I added a couple coats of spray paint... and here is my finished product.....

As I mentioned, there are so many different ideas out there for these, and all of them are truly amazing. It is rewarding to see how two simple household items can pair together for this great project! I chose to put lemons in my dome, but a lot of women have used an assortment of things... ranging from fruit, cheese, brownies, cupcakes, candy, to even a bird's nest with robin eggs.

Thanks for stopping by!

Red, White & Blue

4th of July Wreath

I made this wreath last minute over the weekend. This year has gone by so fast I can't believe the 4th came so quickly, and I almost forgot to make something in celebration!

This project took a little bit of time, but it was VERY easy to make! Below are the materials I used...
- Any fabric
- Wreath

I cut the fabric into strips about two inches wide and eight inches long. (I got a 1/2 yard cut of each fabric and that was perfect!) I alternated the colored strips and just tied them in knots around the wreath. I did not use any adhesive or glue, it was not needed. Once you have completed tying the fabric around the whole wreath you can move the knots (since they aren't glued) and make a pattern alternating them.

Ta da! This project could be used for ANY celebration, just use your choice of fabric!

Hope everyone had a safe holiday! Cheers!

How To Make A Wine Cork Wreath

Wine Corks!
So I have been hoarding collecting wine corks for about a year now and have been brainstorming ideas on how I can use them. (Check out my wine cork votive post!)

Anyways, now I have more than I know what to do with.
Over Christmas my mom and I decided to make a wine cork wreath. I l.o.v.e. the way it turned out!

Here is how to make a Wine Cork Wreath:
You can use any size wreath, I used a straw wreath on my first one... but the Dollar Tree sells grapevine wreaths and they work just as good. On a 10' inch size wreath you need about 200+ corks. Simply start by using a hot glue gun and placing the corks side by side (as seen below).

I sorted out my wine corks so the ones that I had multiple of, I set aside and used them at the base. Leaving the ones that were "special" or "unique" to be places on top.

Then just randomly place your favorite corks on top and Ta Da!
With all the wine corks I have accumulated my mother has been going on a wreath frenzy... she even bought some grape and vines to wrap around. I like it just plain and simple, but I guess you could change out ribbon or flowers to be seasonal.

*I do apologize for the crappy pictures, they were taken on my phone... as my camera is currently "hiding" somewhere.

Dollar Store Birds

Cheap Cheap Bird Make Over

I bought these birds at the Dollar Tree and wasn't sure what I was going to do with them. It is difficult to see in the picture but the main body of the bird is actually textured with sand.

I decided to just spray paint them a slightly lighter color... I used:
I like using this spray paint because it has a gloss finish.

Here is the finished product:

I feel like these pictures just do not do justice! You aren't able to tell how much better they look, but they do! Before they looked very cheap (well probably because they were...) They look SO much better with just a coat of spray paint (and now the sand isn't getting all over the place either). I have seen numerous ceramic birds around at places like Pier One, Pottery Barn, Cost Plus World Market ranging from $5 to $12 a bird.

Total Cost For Me:
$2.18
I already had the spray paint on hand :)

Faux Headboard Art

Finally Something!!!!

So I have gone several years with out a headboard, or anything as a matter of fact, above my bed. It has been driving me crazy so I finally decided to do something! My mom & I spent an afternoon working on this...

Items needed:
PVC or Particle Board
Quilting Batting
Fabric
Staple Gun
Saw Tooth Hangers

Cut your fabric (if it's is print I would recommend lining it up as best as possible!) and place your batting underneath, tuck around the corners and staple! That's it.... attach saw tooth hangers, and hang.

I purchased my PVC board at Home Depot, they will cut it for you.
The dimensions I used are... H 30 in x W 18 in.

I am in L.O.V.E. with this print fabric, it is on my dishes and various places throughout my place. It is burlap so it's a little bit thicker, and it was pretty expensive (even on sale) Eeeek!

The options are endless on this project. You could choose your own size, fabric, colors, solids, prints. You could even add ribbons or buttons, or do a combination of solids and prints...

Simple Cheap & Easy Photo Clips

Dollar Store Make-Over & The $5 Challenge!

I purchased these canvas pictures at the dollar store, plain canvas at the craft store this size are around $4 a piece!

I painted each canvas with paint I already had on hand. (I did have to apply a few coats to cover the print). I purchased the clothes pins at the dollar store as well, glued them on and ta da!

Picture of Kelly and I being silly.

I took this while I was in Hawaii (Kihei, Maui) this January. I get a little picture crazy when I travel...

This is one of many girls nights out Me, Nicole, Danielle, & Jamie out in Ballard.

I placed them in my narrow hallway, I like that they will be easy to change out pictures or whatever I decide to clip on there!

Wine Cork Votive

I Love Wine.

A couple of weeks ago a girlfriend and I went to this cute wine bar... very sheek and modern! On our table was this adorable wine work votive, of course I was inspired and wanted to make my own!

So this is the original one. I wasn't to fond of the bells (seemed to holiday'ish)...

...and ta da! Here is my edition! Instead of using the bells I just weaved ribbon inbetween.

I guess you could use a collection of wine corks, I am too picky and had to have them be all the same. I just used flower wire to assemble and purchased a clear votive at target for $1.

Which do you like better? The bells? Or Ribbon? What would other ideas could you use?

Leave a comment, tell me what you think...
